HTML, CSS and JavaScript are the three languages behind every web page. This course gives you the foundations to build a website, manage CSS files for a modern, attractive look, and make a site interactive and animated with JavaScript. It ends with a complete site and an overview of hosting options.

Learning objectives

Acquire the basics needed to create a website.
Manage CSS files for a modern, attractive, mobile-friendly design.
Make a website interactive and animated with JavaScript.
Put a site online and understand hosting options.

Syllabus

HTML (1 day)

Introduction to HTML; the different elements and semantics.
Structuring a page; using attributes (id, class, href, src, alt…).
Creating forms; accessibility and best practices.

CSS (1 day)

Introduction to CSS; basic properties; selectors.
The box model: padding, margin, border, content.
Positioning and layout with Flexbox; adapting to mobile screens.

JavaScript (1 to 2 days depending on the format)

Introduction to JavaScript; control flow (conditions, loops, functions).
DOM manipulation; events.
Website project; overview of hosting options.

The standard format lasts two to three days; the JavaScript part can be extended by an extra day.

Audience and prerequisites

Developers, engineers and anyone wishing to get started with website creation. Prerequisites: basic programming knowledge.

Teaching methods and assessment

Course materials, corrected exercises, a project running through the course (the website of your choice), end-of-course assessment reviewed by Numersalis, certificate of completion. Free tools (VS Code, a browser).
